I apologize profusely for falling behind; I feel like a horrible mod. But it's not my fault The Boiling Rock paralyzed me with awesome, OKAY.

The Avatar Returns
  • I love how dramatic the confrontation between Aang+Katara/Gran Gran+Sokka is -- with the lighting and the music. The tension is just palpable.

  • And oh, the scene with the contrast of Zuko getting dressed for battle and Sokka putting on his warpaint. I just love it.

(also: Sokka!! in warpaint!!! I love him.)
    • sidenote: I honestly have to say while I do think obviously Sokka has been developed, I don't especially see what everyone's saying about him being completely delegated to comic relief at the beginning. He has his Srs Biz scenes (see: above) along with the scenes where Aang and Katara (& the audience) laugh at him. And that is more or less how it remains, though obviously he's grown up a bit.
    • Also: Sokka in battle is just...d'aww. He gets repeatedly beat down horribly and just keeps going at it. Plus, Zuko getting completely owned by the boomerang is one of my favorite things.

  • Zuko: I've spent years preparing for this encounter: training, meditating. You're just a child!
Aang: Well, you're just a teenager.

I inexplicably love this exchange. It's just so well-written and concise and says a lot about both of them: Zuko taking himself Way Too Seriously and Aang being so genuinely honest.

  • Oh water siblings. Stay adorable.

  • Another one of my favorite things: Sokka's reaction to Appa flying. Because he is a dork.

  • And the first glimpse of real action was excellent; see: fight scenes in Avatar are brilliant.

  • I find it inexplicably hilarious that Iroh slept through the entire squabble. OH IROH. ♥

  • The scene on Appa at the end is just beautiful, also, I adore how quickly Aang snaps out of his funk. (AAAAAAAAAAAAAANG. ♥)

The Southern Air Temple
  • Aang's Evil Grin is perhaps the cutest thing in the world.

  • Zuko and Iroh explaining to Zhao what happened makes me ROFL. "What...did we crash or something?" Oh guys.

  • And: enter Zhao! I will not lie, nearly the only reason I enjoy his character is because he is voiced by Jason Isaacs. But dude is pretty cool in his own right.

  • The color palette in this episode is exceptionally gorgeous and well-done. The intense, overbearing reds of Zuko's half contrasted with the calm blues of the Air Temple and then the hazy yellows of Aang's flashback. FTW, Avatarstaff.

  • Sokka playing air ball with Aang to make him feel better is just -- oh guys. ♥

  • Oh dramatic camera pan on Zuko. CHILLING.

  • And oh Katara and Aang. I cannot even really talk about the scene at the end even semi-coherently, because all it boils down to is: I wibble. Just -- look. :(

  • Momo! I love him. Also, I had completely forgotten that he brought Sokka food as a peace offering and it made me laugh. Profusely.

  • I feel like it's the little details between Aang and Katara that really sell their immediate friendship. The specific one I'm thinking of is at the end of the episode, when they both giggle at "Momo" after he steals one of Sokka's peaches. It just really makes their chemistry seem so natural and real, I feeeeel.

I don't especially see what everyone's saying about him being completely delegated to comic relief at the beginning.

I think my main reason for thinking he's more Comic Relief than he is currently is the early episode running gag with him constantly talking about/wanting food. He is a comic-character and is serious at many points, but the "I'm hungry/want food" gag is something used heavily in the early episodes that I'm glad they didn't continue to the same degree. Sokka's a very witty and comic character all on his own without relegating him to the same ol' food running gag each episode.
